Traverse City, MI — Traverse Area Community Sailing (TACS) is pleased to announce a series of leadership updates that position the organization for continued growth and long-term sustainability, while honoring the individuals who have built its strong foundation.
TACS is taking thoughtful steps to ensure its leadership structure continues to support high-quality programming, expanded access, and long-term organizational stability.
As part of this evolution, longtime Program Director Ben Ferris has made a personal and intentional decision to step back from his Head Coach responsibilities from the High School Middle School Racing Team. After several years of carrying both Program Director and Head Coach roles—an effort that has been instrumental in the sustainability and success of TACS—Ben has chosen this transition to allow for more focus on program leadership, as well as more time for family and personal pursuits.
Ben will continue to serve as Program Director and remain actively involved on-site, supporting coaching staff, mentoring sailors, and guiding the overall direction of the program he has helped shape.
“This community means a great deal to me, and I’m proud of what we’ve built together,” said Ferris. “I love being part of TACS, and I’m not going anywhere. This transition gives me the opportunity to stay closely involved in program leadership while also stepping back from the day-to-day demands of Head Coaching. I’m excited to continue supporting our sailors, coaches, and the growth of this program.”
TACS will hire a dedicated Head Coach for its High School and Middle School teams. This addition will provide increased on-water leadership, greater coaching support, and enhanced consistency across programming.
In addition, Anne Schneider, who has served as Business Manager for the past year and a half, will transition into an expanded leadership role as TACS establishes its first Executive Director position. This role will focus on strengthening organizational operations, supporting long-term strategic planning, and expanding community engagement and fundraising capacity.
“This transition represents an important step in ensuring the long-term sustainability of Traverse Area Community Sailing as a vital community asset,” said Tom Roop, Board President. “As our programs grow, it is essential that we strengthen our leadership structure so we can continue meeting the needs of our community while maintaining the quality, accessibility, and impact that define TACS.”
As part of this next chapter, TACS will engage its community to gather feedback to help inform future planning and ensure the organization continues to reflect the needs of the Grand Traverse region.
Traverse Area Community Sailing remains committed to providing accessible, high-quality sailing opportunities and fostering a lifelong connection to the water.
